Produkcja określana jeszcze przed premierą jako nadzieja cRPG. Tym większa, że sami autorzy namaścili ją na duchowego spadkobiercę Baldur's Gate.
Dragon Age: Origins to gra cRPG stworzona w całości przez studio BioWare. Dla kanadyjskiego dewelopera projekt ten stanowi powrót do korzeni, po tym, jak w 1998 r. firma zasłynęła w świecie kultowym Baldur’s Gate, a potem wsławiła się w gatunku role-playing takimi dziełami, jak Neverwinter Nights oraz Knights of the Old Republic.
Akcja Origins przenosi nas do umiejscowionego na kontynencie Thedas królestwa Ferelden. Kraina ta, zamieszkiwana przez ludzi, elfy i krasnoludy, stała się obiektem ataku Plagi, zarazy złożonej z najrozmaitszych potworów (balrogów, kościei, plagowilków itp.). By ochronić ludność przed złem, do obrony Ferelden zaangażowano najodważniejszych bohaterów, drużynę Szarych Strażników. Gracz ma za zadanie pokierować jej poczynaniami i poprowadzić do zwycięstwa w trwającej blisko 50 godzin kampanii.
Formacja składa się z czterech postaci. Jedną z nich użytkownik może samodzielnie wykreować, wybierając jej rasę, płeć, klasę (wojownik, łotrzyk lub mag) oraz pochodzenie. Ostatni z elementów decyduje o tym, w jaki sposób rozpocznie się przygoda, a także znajduje swoje odzwierciedlenie w dalszych etapach rozgrywki, złożonych z eksploracji krainy fantasy, rozmów z napotkanymi osobami i walk przy użyciu tradycyjnej broni białej oraz magii.
Jednym z najciekawszych elementów Dragon Age jest konieczność myślenia o konsekwencjach własnych decyzji. Prawie każda rozmowa z niezależnymi postaciami obfituje w rozmaite odpowiedzi, dzięki którym możemy nie tylko wykreować własną postać, ale i wpłynąć na otoczenie. Niejednokrotnie musimy także wybierać pomiędzy dwoma niezbyt optymistycznymi wariantami. Czasem oznacza to konieczność stoczenia potyczki nawet z członkami własnej drużyny, którym mogą nie spodobać się nasze pomysły.
Starcia z przeciwnikami odbywają się w czasie rzeczywistym, jednak autorzy Dragon Age wzorem poprzednich dzieł oddali do dyspozycji gracza także system aktywnej pauzy, pozwalający na uporządkowanie wydarzeń dziejących się na ekranie poprzez wskazanie poszczególnym wojownikom celów ataku czy też ułożenie kombinacji zaklęć. Poza stałymi członkami drużyny zespół może zostać zasilony również przez chowańce, m.in. bojowe psy Mabari.
