Prototype to dziejąca się w otwartym na wzór Grand Theft Auto świecie gra akcji, w której wcielamy się w postać posiadającego nadnaturalne zdolności bohatera wmieszanego w rozległy trwający od wielu lat spisek. Produkcja została opracowana przez firmę Radical Entertainment. Jej wydawcą jest należąca do koncernu Vivendi Games Sierra Entertainment.
Prototype to gra akcji dziejąca się w otwartym na wzór Grand Theft Auto świecie, w której wcielamy się w postać posiadającego nadnaturalne zdolności bohatera wmieszanego w rozległy trwający od wielu lat spisek. W grze wcielimy się w tytułowy prototyp, obdarzonego przez genetyczne eksperymenty nadnaturalnymi zdolnościami człowieka – Aleksa Mercera. Zmiany poczynione w jego genomie doprowadziły do tego, że posiada on zadziwiającą zdolność transformacji własnego ciała. Dzięki temu może przyjmować wygląd napotkanych ludzi. Mało tego, potrafi również przejmować ich wspomnienia i umiejętności. Na tym jednak nie koniec jego mocy. W trakcie starcia może bowiem w ten sposób zmodyfikować swoje ciało, by stało się potężną maszyną do zabijania. Wykształcenie ogromnych szponów czy przyjęcie postaci ogromnego monstrum nie stanowi dla niego większego problemu.
Alex zmuszony jest skorzystać ze swoich zdolności, by odnaleźć swoją tożsamość (nie pamięta niczego, co działo się przed eksperymentami), a także zmierzyć się z licznymi organizacjami wchodzącymi w skład rozległego spisku. W tym celu przemierza Nowy York, wykonuje rozmaite zlecenia, czasem działając w ukryciu a czasem stając do otwartej walki. W takich momentach wykorzystuje swój rozległy arsenał ciosów, a jego ataki odznaczają się taką mocą, że nie tylko masakruje przeciwników ale również dewastuje otoczenie.
